Ice Cave Discovery

The Ice Cave Discovery is a full day adventure in winter conditions and our guides’ favourite winter trip. Hiking across the glacier, we reach remote locations and beautiful features keeping our groups small (maximum 9 clients).

In addition to a super jeep ride through the glacier valley, bridge crossings over glacial streams and visiting ice caves, we hike on the glacier for 1,5-2h total. During this tour we will visit 1 ice cave as well as a beautiful blue feature on the glacier, which we call ‘the Blue Rose’. Our winter 2022-2023 tour also visits the Sapphire Ice Cave and is a good option for those wanting to add a little extra to their trip. On this tour we head out for a full day of exploration, we start off the tour in winter 2021-2022 by exploring the Sapphire ice cave, the most stunning ice cave in Iceland currently, after that we head on on a glacier hike where we explore the top of the ice and visit interesting glacier features.

From the meeting location at Jökulsárlón, we begin our journey in a modified super jeep to reach the base of the glacier. During the hike we will make our way up and across the glacial tongue to interesting features and ice caves, with plenty of time to explore, take photos, and have a short lunch break.

Ice caves are constantly evolving, the average caves are from 30-100m in length. When scouting for caves we look not only at the size but also the colours and overall experience.

Please note that we will not be the only group visiting the ice cave. We try to accurately represent the cave as you would experience and be able to photograph it yourself. Visit our instagram @localguide to see photos we’ve been tagged in as well as those we have posted throughout the season.

Please wear warm and waterproof outdoor clothing, a hat and gloves. We recommend thicker, woollen socks, avoiding cotton clothing and bringing layers.

Hiking boots can be rented on location for 1000 ISK.

A small backpack for an extra layer, water bottle and lunch. The cafe at Jökulsárlón may be open before the tour starts for snacks but we advise buying something more substantial (e.g. a sandwich) the day/night before.

All our public tours are subject to 24h cancellation policy with a full refund. Please read more about it here.
