In Reykjanes Peninsula geo park you will discover bubbling geothermal fields where boiling multicolored mud pits emitting fumes from the depths of the earth are a common sight. Nearby Kleifarvatn volcanic lake and Green Lake/Grænavatn are the first stops before continuing to the bridge between the two continents.

Here you’ll walk across a lava field to the very visible rift between two tectonic plates that are constantly drifting apart from each other. This rift is only one of hundreds that are part of the massive Mid Atlantic Rift that goes through Iceland starting at the very tip of Reykjanes peninsula and stretching diagonally through the country to the northeast.

Continuing along the peninsula, you’ll make a stop at Reykjanes Lighthouse and the soaring sea cliffs which may be bustling with various kinds of sea birds if it is early summer. Gunnuhver, the largest mud spring in Iceland, is also not to be missed. At 20 meters across, it’s vigorously boiling clay is quite impressive situated in equally stunning volcanic surroundings.
